Let Me Read To Be Made Well To You!

I forget sometimes that books used only to be read out loud. Before the advent of the printing press, before the vast majority of adults were able to read, even the literate members of society pretty much only read out loud. It was very strange—and a learned skill—to read silently and to yourself.

So maybe that’s why it still feels so meaningful to hear books read out loud. Whether it’s listening to an audiobook (especially read by the author) or reading with our kids at night, the book takes on an additional depth and layer of meaning when the words are spoken out loud.

As a writer, I read every word of every book I write out loud more than once. It helps me make sure the rhythm works and that there aren’t repetitive words and that it all flows.
