The Song of Our Scars

So many of us are carrying so much pain in our bodies and minds, which may be why I am loving The Song of Our Scars by Haider Warraich (it has started to read almost like a thriller as it traces the history of the opioid epidemic).

I love it for its combination of personal, clinical, and historical reflection on the current state of chronic pain. For anyone who wants to understand why so many of us are carrying so much pain in our bodies and minds, The Song of Our Scars is a fascinating and sobering place to start.

I’m especially intrigued by the way modern medicine, industry, and consumerism have taken away meaning from pain, and I would love to hear more about how we could reintroduce meaning to pain in a way that leads us toward healing.
