After we pay attention to pain, the second step to healing is to ask for help.
There are two ways we can ask for help. I think of them as vertical and horizontal. The vertical way is to pray. Cry out to God. This can come through audible words or journal entries or even just sitting in the painful place and contemplating God’s presence.
The horizontal way is to ask other people for help. Jesus says that his body still exists among us in and through one another. We can ask other people to be the hands and feet of love and care. When you notice your pain, you can ask other people:
- to listen
- to hold your hand
- to show up with a meal
- to be with you in the dark, hard places.
Ask for help.
