“People with developmental disabilities were granted the legal right to treatment in 1974…”
–Exhibit Traces ‘Unfinished Journey’ Of Those With IDD
Okay, wait. I know a lot about disability rights and their history. I knew that kids with Down syndrome weren’t guaranteed an education until my lifetime. I know that discrimination still exists in the workplace and so many other spaces.
But I had no idea that it was once perfectly legal to deny medical treatment to people with developmental disabilities until I read this article about an exhibit in Minnesota.
We’ve come a long way. We’ve got a long way to go.
That’s one reason I’m offering my brand new workshop: Reimagining Family Life with Disability. I want our imaginations to be shaped by possibility rather than by fear or inaccurate assumptions as we take steps toward a good, connected, purposeful future for our families. Join me!
